Shallow sections of the water, insufficient width along the Danube and water level estimations hinder vessels from performing an efficient transportation, because these factors trigger high fuel consumption, long standstills and increased costs. The second effect is the reduced profit leading to lack of attractiveness for customers.
This cause-effect process requires the involvement of all riparian countries in solving a macro-regional challenge. Therefore, one of the #EUSDR’s objectives is to improve transportation conditions for inland waterways.
To this end, a project financed by #ConnectingEuropeFacility was meant to contribute to increase safety and efficiency, while reducing pollution and preserving the environment: #FAIRWAY.
Precisely, by purchasing state-of-the-art equipment for hydrological services (surveying vessels, marking vessels etc.), #FAIRWAY will help skippers by providing accurate and harmonized navigation information about the depth of the river, shallow sections, water levels and water level forecasts.
Another important activity developed by #FAIRWAY is informing the decision-makers in the region about the challenges rising up from these bottlenecks and the necessity to act together for improvement.
Let’s sail safely and live better along the Danube!
