MRS Trio Presidencies securing Continuity and Coordination

The chairpersons of the National Coordinators (Trio Presidencies) of the four macro-regional strategies (MRS) met DG REGIO and Interact online on 17th June 2020.  This was the second meeting of this format, following the first one held  under the umbrella of the first MRS week in February 2020 in Brussels.  The agenda of the meeting consisted of two main points:

 

  • the status quo and next steps in the ongoing process of embedding the strategies into EU funding programmes and
  • the role of macro-regional strategies in addressing COVID-19 related challenges.

 

The Trio Presidencies recognised the potential of MRS to jointly translate the European Green Deal into local action in the course of the embedding process. Due to their transnational scope, MRS are also very well suited to address COVID-19 related challenges in transnational fields such as tourism, research & innovation and SME support.

 

Interact, being a programme responsible for learning and exchange across EU territorial cooperation programmes and macro-regional strategies, informed about its activities in support of the embedding process and activities in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

 

The online meeting was initiated and organised by the Croatian EUSDR Presidency with support of the Interact Programme and Danube Strategy Point.

For the purpose of securing coherency, ensuring strategic stability and fostering greater continuity of the work within each macro-regional strategy, the previous and the future Presidency proactively support the current Presidency in its tasks, forming the so-called Trio Presidency. The tasks include the preparation of the Annual Forum, preparation of meetings and documents and representation towards the European political level. Currently, the EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region is chaired by Slovenia, the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region is chaired by France and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region is chaired by Finland. The Presidencies rotate on a yearly basis, strengthening the ownership of the strategies in each participating state.
