On June 12, 2025, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, will host a strategic workshop titled “Advancing Connectivity, Interoperability, and Resilience of the Danube Region Railway Network.” Taking place under the auspices of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR), this event, organised by Priority Area 1b – Rail-Road-Air Mobility, aims to address the pressing challenges and opportunities in the region’s rail transport sector.
Fostering Regional Collaboration
The workshop seeks to bring together key stakeholders from across the Danube Region, including national and regional transport authorities, railway operators, infrastructure managers, and representatives from the European Commission. The primary objective is to facilitate dialogue and cooperation to enhance the interoperability, efficiency, and resilience of the railway network, thereby promoting sustainable and seamless cross-border mobility.
Aligning with EU Transport Objectives
This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) policy, particularly the development of the Rhine-Danube Core Network Corridor. By focusing on eliminating infrastructural bottlenecks and harmonising technical standards, the workshop supports the EU’s commitment to creating a more connected, greener, and low-carbon Europe. The event will also explore the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), a crucial component in achieving interoperability across national rail systems.
Participants will engage in comprehensive discussions on:
-
Identifying and addressing missing links and bottlenecks in the rail infrastructure.
-
Strategies for the electrification and digitalisation of railway lines.
-
Implementing sustainable transport solutions to improve connectivity and mobility.
-
Enhancing the resilience of rail transport systems in times of crisis.
-
Developing integrated solutions for supporting mobility and connectivity in the cross-border area.
Expected Outcomes
The workshop aims to produce actionable strategies and collaborative frameworks that will contribute to the modernisation and integration of the Danube Region’s railway network. By fostering a shared vision and commitment among stakeholders, the event is expected to catalyse investments and policy initiatives that will enhance the region’s economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
